Palmanova

A Gem of History and Architecture

Founded in 1593 by the Republic of Venice as a military fortress, Palmanova was designed with extraordinary geometric precision to be impenetrable. The city was conceived as a cutting-edge military engineering project, built to protect the Venetian borders from Ottoman and Imperial invasions. Today, it remains one of the few cities in the world with a perfect star-shaped layout and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017. Walking along its walls and passing through its monumental gates (Porta Udine, Porta Cividale, and Porta Aquileia) is like stepping into Renaissance history.

Authentic Flavors of Friuli

Palmanova is also a perfect destination for food enthusiasts. Local restaurants and taverns serve traditional Friulian specialties such as frico (a savory cake made with potatoes and cheese), toc in braide (a creamy polenta with melted cheese), and the famous cjarsons, sweet-and-savory stuffed pasta from the Carnic tradition.

And of course, there’s wine. This is the land of Friulano, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, and Pignolo. A glass of local wine paired with traditional cured meats and cheeses is the perfect way to complete your culinary journey.

In the heart of Friuli Venezia Giulia, nestled between green plains and rich history, lies Palmanova, a one-of-a-kind city. Known as the "star-shaped city" for its unique nine-pointed star layout, it’s a must-see destination for lovers of art, history, and fine cuisine.

What to See and Do in Palmanova

A visit to Palmanova begins in Piazza Grande, the heart of the city, from which the main streets radiate symmetrically. Here, you can visit the Dogale Cathedral, an elegant Baroque building overlooking the square, and the Military History Museum, which offers in-depth insight into the city’s defensive legacy.

Nature lovers and walkers will enjoy the full circuit of the bastioned walls, a scenic 7-kilometer path blending architecture and landscape. Every September, Palmanova comes alive with a historical reenactment of its founding, featuring costumed actors, encampments, and live performances throughout the city streets.
